インフラ先端技術とは Laboratory on Innovative Techniques for Infrastructures (ITIL) is a laboratory founded in Kyoto University by two highway companies, aiming to advance roadway management by developing innovative techniques for inspecting invisible (or hardly visible) damage in civil infrastructures such as numerous bridges, by establishing a framework for big-data utilization, by promptly applying the research findings to real structures, and by optimizing the information collection and comprehension.

Prof. Shiotani received “Joseph Kaiser Achievement Award” from AEWG, USA. The third Japanese recipient, followed by Emeritus Professor of U Tokyo, K. Yamaguchi, 1992 and Emeritus Professor of Aoyama Gakuin U, M. Takemoto, 2006. Joseph Kaiser Achievement Award is an award to be present whenever warranted to an individual or individuals for a particularly significant accomplishment in the science and technology of acoustic emission or for meritorious achievement in the field of acoustic emission .

Prof. Shiotani delivered an invited lecture entitled “Current situation and background of social infrastructure” and Associate Prof. Nishida also had a lecture entitled “Innovative non-destructive testing technique for damage evaluation of concreate” in NIMS (National Institute for Materials Science) Summer School 2016. In addition, the open experiment of Acoustic Emission measurement in bending test for small concreate test piece was demonstrated. The academic event, in which 57 young researchers and engineers participated, finished successfully!

At department of structural and building engineering, Delft University of technology in The Netherlands, Prof. Shiotani delivered an invited lecture on Application of Elastic Wave Tomography with Acoustic Emission Activity, discussed the development of tomographic technique in The Netherlands with Prof. Hordijk, Dr. Yuguang (TU Delft) and Dr. Prooria, Dr. Bigaj (TNO).

At the two consultant firms, Connect Plus and XEIAD, in England, Prof. Shiotani delivered a speech on Applicability of Elastic Wave Tomography for M25 and Queen Elizabeth 2nd Bridge. Dr. Hashimoto and Prof. Kobayashi (Nihon University) introduced the analysis technique and the practical cases of 3D tomography technique.

Prof. Shiotani was decided to award “Kaiser Award (Joseph Kaiser Achievement Award)” in 58th AEWG business meeting n Drexel University(Philadelphia, USA). This is a great announcement from AEWG. Following notable pioneers on AE history, the Joseph Kaiser Achievement Award from Acoustic Emission Working Group is given. It is the award named by famous AE researcher Kaiser as known as Kaiser effect in the AE science. The official award ceremony will be in the next AEWG meeting commemorating 50th anniversary of AEWG.

An article “Innovative non-destructive measurements and evaluation techniques for sustainable asset managements of infrastructures (持続可能なインフラアセットのための先端非破壊計測・評価技術)“ was reported at THE NIKKAN KOGYO SHIMBUN H27.10.27. According to news report, it stated that the deterioration quantification for infrastructures by AE measurement can be visualized by 3D Method of AE Tomography.

Prof. Shiotani served as a convener of ISO/TC135/SC9 meeting for WG4, held in Abend, São Paulo, Brazil. Three proposals (Acoustic Emission testing method standard for concrete structures) were approved within 2 day deliberation and transfer to WorkingDraft and committeeDraft. Currently, four drafts, same as SC, were proposed. Following the ISO standardization, Acoustic Emission method will be in the low-field limit. It is expected that Japanese society will be the global leader in the NDT method.

Prof. Shiotoni and Prof. Nishida were invited to serve as chaired at “15th of Symposium on Concrete Structures Scenario, JSMS”, held in Kyoto Terrsa (Kyoto city). Moreover, Prof. Nishida delivered a presentation entitled “Evaluation of Properties of Concrete Mixed with Seawater after 27-year Exposure under Marine Environment”. Another highlight of the conference was the Symposium committee has awarded its Best paper Prize to Prof. Nishida.

In the 6th Conference on Emergin Technologies in Non-Destructive Testing (ETNDT6), taking place in Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Prof. Shiotani delivered a Keynote Lecture entitled "Strategic Maintenance Philosophy for Infra-Asset with Innovative NDT," Assoc. Prof. Kobayashi gave a presentation entitled "Two-dimensional AE-Tomography based on ray-trace technique for anisotropic materials," Assoc. Prof. Asaue gave a presentation entitled "Ultrasonic Method for Predicting Residual Tensile Stress of Wedge Type Ground Anchors," and Assist. Prof. Chang gave a presentation entitled "Experimental verification of a Rayleigh-wave based technique for detecting the depth of deteriorated concrete." Following the conference, Prof. Shiotani and Assist. Prof. Chang gave a topic presentation entitled "On-site evaluation of RC bridge deck by AE tomography" in the Committee Meeting of RILEM Technical Committee (TC239-MCM).
